All children dream. Poor children dream too. Many want to climb to their highest possible level, be successful, and give back to the world. They should not be held back by lack of funds. We are the Village and we can ensure they have equal opportunities.
This is motivation for the Sens Foundation, Max Keeping Foundation, in partnership with the University of Ottawa to initiate the Just One Person awards celebration as a vehicle to raise funds for a scholarship program at the University of Ottawa for deserving youth in the care of the Crown. Just One Person allows the Sens Foundation and the Max Keeping Foundation to honour someone from the village who has demonstrated the Power of One to make a difference in the life of the community.
The event’s second year, presented by Microsoft, in partnership with Bell, the Ottawa Citizen and Scotiabank was a responding success and honoured Sal Iacono, Senior Vice-President Bell, Enterprise Group, who, as just one person, quietly and with dignity, helped in dozens of ways for hundreds of families.
More than 400 people gathered to celebrate Mr. Iacono’s accomplishments at a reception held at Scotiabank Place prior to the Senators game versus the Washington Capitals on Thursday, November 8, 2007. Long time friend and supporter Delaney Dunlop, whose tribute touched the hearts of guests, presented the award to Mr. Iacono.
“I always enjoy coming to see Sal and his family as well as the Bell Canada families that work to make sure people with disabilities can live better lives. It is people like Sal who devote their lives to others, and work so diligently to make sure that things get done who truly make a difference. He is a leader who encourages others to help as well.”
Delaney Dunlop
“Individually and collectively, we can help make dreams come true and individually and collectively we can help make our community richer, better and more rewarding.”
Sal Iacono, Senior Vice-President Bell, Enterprise Group
As a result of this special event $30,000 was raised which will be matched by the University of Ottawa and by the Government of Ontario ($90,000 once matched) Moving forward the endowment fund will reach its first peak of $180,000 and will allow the first scholarships to be awarded for the 2008-09 academic year.
“Without these scholarships, these young people would most likely be unable to undertake postsecondary studies. This is an opportunity to fulfill dreams. Because of you, these young people have the sense that someone cares about their future.”
Dr. Gilles G. Patry, President and Vice-Chancellor, University of Ottawa
This will be a tremendous lift for those less fortunate youth to help them in their climb to their highest possible heights.
